Home education in England has grown dramatically — around 126,000 children were recorded as home-educated at the autumn 2025 census, and the numbers rise year on year. Families choose it for every reason imaginable: a child's mental health, unmet special educational needs, bullying, a school place that never came, or a considered belief that they can do better for their child themselves. Whatever the reason, they are increasingly on their own.

Under the Act, local authorities in England will keep a register of children not in school, and parents will need to provide information about how their child is educated — with the rules expected to take effect from 2027.
